We started this band before we knew how to play instruments. That seems like a ridiculous thing to say, but it's true. When you're fourteen years old and caught up in the weeklong haze of excitement that follows your first real rock concert, your lack of talent and lack of gear don't seem like such huge obstacles.

We wrote a lot of songs in the following four years. We were never all that into covers. At first, we just weren't good enough to play them. But later on, we realized that brainstorming riffs and lyrics and shaping them into songs was so much more fulfilling and satisfying than even a perfectly executed classic rock solo could ever be.

Only a handful of those songs ended up on Don't Let the Future Scare You. The rest were discarded for various reasons, but I wanted to compile some highlights. The songs in this collection range from unfinished ideas to full-band demos to complete but glaringly amateur recordings. It includes the very first song we wrote together as well as the very last. Most of them won't mean much to anyone except the people who wrote and played them, but that's okay. They exist as a collective journal of our teenage years, a time capsule we buried with bits of ourselves from our irretrievable adolescence.

This is us, discovering ourselves. I'm glad we pressed record.
